Subtly Changing the Way You Live

Don’t let changes in your hearing subtly change the way you live
Most of us will experience changes hearing at some point in our life.  There are many different causes of hearing loss. Some have a medical issue associated with their ear.  For others, the cause is prolonged noise exposure or acoustic trauma.  Genetics can also play a role in the progression of hearing loss.  Then there’s the inevitable birthday factor...which is a good thing; to keep having birthdays that is. Changes start pretty early.  At around 40 years of age we start to see changes in our vision.  For hearing, the ear starts to change in our 20’s but most of us aren’t affected by it until our 60’s.
KEEP UP WITH YOUR LIFE
People with hearing loss delay a decision to get hearing help because they are unaware of the fact that receiving early treatment for hearing loss has the potential to literally transform their lives. For many people admitting their health concerns equates to an admission of shortcomings  Having health concerns certainly does not mean that you are “less than” or that it is an admission of passing “your prime.”  Accepting and addressing your health concerns is a strong statement that you value your life and your lifestyle. Hearing is no exception.
Research by the National Council on the Aging on more than 2,000 people with hearing loss, as well as their significant others, demonstrated that hearing aids clearly are associated with impressive improvements in the social, emotional, psychological, and physical well-being of people with hearing loss in all hearing loss categories from mild to severe. Specifically, hearing aid usage is positively related to the following quality of life issues.
Hearing loss treatment was shown to improve:
  • Earning power
  • Communication in relationships
  • Intimacy and warmth in family relationships
  • Ease in communication
  • Emotional stability
  • Sense of control over life events
  • Perception of mental functioning
  • Physical health
  • Group social participation
DON’T DELAY
The longer you go without diagnosis and treatment, the harder it is for your brain to process sound properly. You gradually start to alter your own lifestyle without even knowing it… not engaging as much in family gatherings because it is difficult to follow conversation, choosing not to go to a play or a social event because you no longer enjoy it, picking different restaurants based on your ability to understand table conversation, opting out of card club or church socials, or finding professional meetings to be taxing because of concern that you might miss something or say something inappropriate.
Getting your hearing assessed and treated is a proactive way to keep you in the game of life with your colleagues, your family and your friends.  Make an appointment to get your hearing evaluated by a licensed audiologist.  The sounds of your life continue with or without you being a part of it. You don’t have to miss it!  We believe when you hear better, you live better!
